John McDermott (Canadian) - Song for the Mira
Your ratings and comments are welcome! This video is from John McDermott's live DVD "A Time to Remember" (2002) where he sings a nice rendition of "Song for the Mira". This folk song is about the Mira River in Nova Scotia Canada, and also mentions the community of Marion Bridge. The song was originally written by a local songwriter named Allister MacGillivray, and has also been recorded by Nova Scotia native Anne Murray. The studio (not live) version of this song is also on the CD (also released in 2002) that has the same title as the DVD. This DVD version omits one chorus and the third and fourth verses of the song:
"Out on the Mira on soft summer nights,
The bonfires blaze to the childre...

Your ratings and comments are welcome! Video from John McDermott's live DVD "A Time to Remember" (2002). This ballad is a folk song about the Battle of Culloden in 1746, which ended the Jacobite Uprising and in effect, ended the Scottish clan system and outlawed the wearing o' the kilt. Do a Google or Wiki search for "Culloden". The Jacobites were trying to restore the Stewart family ("Bonnie P...

Your ratings and comments are welcome! This is a video clip from comedian Gallagher's show titled "Melon Crazy." Bill Kirchenbauer was a guest act in the show, and this is a short segment of Bill's routine, in which he tells a funny joke about the invention of the bagpipes. It's good for a few chuckles.

Your ratings and comments are welcome! In every war, it is the "grunts" - the boots on the ground, that pay the greatest share of the cost of battle. And it is the soldier who offers up the most fervent and sincere prayers for peace, because they know that the two "givens" of war are #1 - young men die, and #2 - nothing can change number one. This is a video clip from John McDermott's live DVD ...

Your ratings and comments are welcome! Video from John McDermott's live DVD "A Time to Remember" (2002). Aside from his recordings of "Danny Boy," fans of John McDermott would probably rank "The Old Man" as their favorite. And this live performance is, by far, the best of his many recordings of the song. He displays genuine emotion over the loss of his own father. A real tear-jerker. The studio...

I hope John sings a song with Celine Dion one day soon. I would love to hear the different styles merge into one. Will u ever play in Las Vegas?? plz take Andy K. to Vegas with you!! 😅
Just watched the movie ‘Living” and it really got to me ❤️
Adolph Hitler was there at that time. He didn't approve of the truce but didn't break it.
His voice helps me to hold back the dark
I thought I would look at a t v show called wagon train. I would say it is from the early forties Is this episode that I saw for the first time a This man is looking for his daughter. They show her working as the madam in an old shaloon. Is two men walk in the saloon with a package. She becomes so happy and excited.Because she ordered something months ago. They opened it and it was a beautiful music box. It twinkled out a song which she's sang. It was may moon. So so beautiful that inspired me to look for it on youtube. It was then that I met jpJohn McDermont! Funny how things happen! Of course, Now I am obsessed! I will be enjoying his voice and songs For the rest of my life I would never have known him if I didn't just look at that t v show!!
1:38 beautiful John
When my mom passed on i went out to the patio looked at the brightest star then i made a toast w/some irish whiskey and said heres to you mom .
When men are men and governments can go to hell
My father (1897-1970) was an infantry NCO in WWI and a commissioned officer in WWII. Wounded 3 times in each war. I spent 32 years in the US Army, first 8 years as an enlisted Airborne Infantry/ Ranger; the rest as an Airborne Infantry/ Special Forces officer. 5 years, 8 months total time in close combat. Wounded about a dozen times. ANYWAY. I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1960s, when music and fabulous musicians were everywhere. I've been playing guitar and singing since I was 5 years old. BUT. This song? I've played it many times, but I've never been able to sing it because I fall to pieces. I can play with a big knot in my throat, but not sing. Every person in touch with his/ her heart should be deeply moved by it. We combat vets? I don't believe I've ever seen ANY of us -- from ANY Christian country -- without tears running. But I come back to it every year. Thank you, John McCutcheon, for this magnificent song.
My wife had me listen to this song. O cried.
Saw John in Denver Colorado many moon's ago, with the Irish tenors 😊he sang the old man 😢 I'll never forget it ❤
I wish this is what they meant by "the war to end all wars".
Brian Regan kinda borrowed this
I really love this song.. it reminds me of my father and i..
I was taken back to when I was little girl and growing up loving to hear my dad play the fiddle. Dad was from New Waterford Cape Breton and through him I received the importance and love of music. <3
John may have spent the majority of his life I'm Canada and be a Canadian.citizen but he's.still a.Scotsman born and bred and proud of it
His voice is unique and comforting
John Mc Dermott is the best in the world
Beautiful performance from Sinda Gibson's and Company from Cape Breton Nova Scotia Canada
This song makes me homesick for a place I've never been
John has an amazing voice, it’s a pleasure to listen to him
I just love John, and his music / voice. This is such a fantastic and beautiful masterpiece. I just got through listening to “My Old Man”, twice, tears and all.
Many in my family are serving or have served in the US Military. I want to thank you for reminding us of this bit of history. The soldiers, sailors, and airmen are the people who suffer the greatest losses when countries choose to war with each other.
As I was researching Irish folk songs, I came across several of John McDermott's songs, one of which is "The Old Man." He's really good, I like his music. I really love world music. Loreena Mckennett, a huge talent, is Canadian, and I love her music, as well as all the Celtic Men and Women. Do all roads lead to Celtic music?
Brilliant young talent. Nova Scotia is amazing 🇿🇦
"Life is an ocean; LOVE is a boat" ⛵
Beautiful
Just wonderful! My lovely bride passed away 11 years ago, this is a song that keeps her alive in my heart. Thank you, John, and my God bless you!
Is this the set from Melon Crazy?
Cape Breton is beautiful, this song is beautiful...and John McDermott does them both justice.
Beautiful. It seems all wars can be traced to family feuds and the history gets covered up.
Loved it. Very emotional.
If a song were made of the sinking of the LEOPOLDVILLE SHIP, there would be many tears.
Eh

This song is so beautiful and says it all. Thank you!
I can’t listen to this without tears.
Me too
Yup! Happens every time!
He’s so full of it. Manufactured emotion. He DID NOT WRITE THIS, lied to an interviewer years ago that he did. This is a Phil Coulter song. He tried to screw around on his wife with me. He’s a colossal narcissist!
A great singer and a wonderful story! It is of those who fight wars and don’t make policies. The leaders force the young men of their respective countries to deal with the carnage and death. God Bless the soldiers who go off to fight for the politicians. Thank you Mr McDermott for a wonderful song of man’s caring of his fellow man for a short while during “Hell on Earth”!
The first time I learned about this bit of history was watching the Doctor Who special with Peter Capaldi and now I've discovered the song. It's one of my favorite pieces of history to learn of and now the song has to be my most favorite.
Wonderful pipers. And real Highland fling. Sword dance, class act ❤ 😊 😃 😔 😢
Til min far jeg strøede på havet i går
Wonderful. Thanks for posting. Love it.
Thank you
Abso damn lutely FANTASTIC
My father quoted this on my parent’s 50th anniversary. He got chocked up. He now has Alzheimer’s but my mom is by his side everyday. This song chokes me up every time.
